HISTORY DANCES BACK TO HARLEM:
Legendary Harvest Moon Ball Winners Return to the Dance Floor
History dances back to Harlem.
Special guests Sonny Allen, Crystal Johnson, Tiny Thomas, Sugar Sullivan, and other winners of Harlem’s Harvest Moon Ball Lindy Hop dance contests from the 1950′s to the 70′s, will once again board the A Train to grace the dance floors of the Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy Community Center in Harlem.
The honored guests will then judge the evening’s Strictly Lindy Hop competition at 10 p.m. Lindy hoppers of all ages will compete for prizes and the honor of participating in a final Lindy hop jam session with the night’s living legends. The dancing ends at 11pm.
During its heyday from 1935–1980, the Harvest Moon Ball was staged at Madison Square Garden, and then from 1980-1984 at other locations. It was the most heavily attended and most prestigious dance contest in New York City.
Couples from the tri-state area and beyond competed for titles in six categories that sometimes changed year-to-year, such as waltz, fox trot, jitterbug, conga, collegiate shag, and of course, Lindy Hop. Lindy Hop was always in the competition, and Harlemites from the Savoy Ballroom and the Savoy Manor won all but three or four of the titles over the years.
The Harlem Swing Dance Society’s mission is to reinvigorate, promote and preserve Harlem’s signature cultural dance, the Lindy Hop, in its Harlem home.
